The Commonwealth

Chapter 6 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 20-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Sanctions have helped the Commonwealth in its endeavour to institute democracy and prevent human rights violations in the developing world. While the organization's emphasis on voluntary and consensus-based decision-making acts as an impediment to securing compliance among members on a range of subjects, including sanctions, the group's commitment to its core values unites them in purpose. Taking into consideration the diversity among Commonwealth members, this entry explores themes like membership suspension, economic sanctions, arms embargo, and readmittance. It argues that, while sanctions have aided the Commonwealth in altering the policies of the sanctioned states, challenges often arise as the group comprises of both, the former colonizers as well as colonized states.
