Termination of sanctions
Clara Portela
Chapter 70 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 239-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The termination of sanctions has traditionally received little attention. Sunset clauses introduced by the UN Security Council (UNSC) have facilitated the termination of sanctions regimes and assuaged concerns that they would otherwise continue in perpetuity. Certain practices by senders, however, continue to make the ending of sanctions regimes difficult; the habit of leaving a residual measure in place after the political crisis has been resolved and/or the main objectives achieved continues absent provisions regulating conditions for sanctions easing or lifting.
