Chapter 8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of International Sanctions, 2025, pp 27-30 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
France plays an active role in the imposition of international sanctions, using its status as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and as a member of the European Union (EU). In this context, France has put in place a legal and institutional framework to respond effectively to challenging international situations, without jeopardizing its own interests. France's approach to international sanctions reflects its commitment to maintaining international peace and security, defending the rule of law, and promoting human rights. It also illustrates France's attachment to multilateralism and diplomatic engagement to resolve international crises.
