Cryptocurrency custody

Arthur Carvalho

Chapter 10 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 52-55 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Cryptocurrency custody is a pivotal aspect of the digital asset ecosystem, balancing the autonomy of self-custody with the convenience and security of third-party services. Self-custody empowers users with direct control over their assets, but it also demands significant technical responsibility. Conversely, third-party custody offers enhanced security and ease of use yet reintroduces risks like counterparty failure and centralization vulnerabilities. This chapter explores such a dichotomy alongside some key considerations in selecting a cryptocurrency custody solution, including regulatory compliance, security audits, proof of reserves, and integration capabilities. It provides an overview of the challenges and future trends in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency asset management.
