Decentralized science

Chapter 18 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 93-100 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Decentralized science (DeSci) represents an emerging movement with the objective of leveraging the potential of decentralized technologies, such as immutable records and tokens, to transform the manner in which scientific research is conducted, funded, and shared. The main goal is to overcome the limitations of traditional publishing models, thereby promoting transparency, trust, efficiency, and timeliness. This will facilitate broader access to scientific knowledge for a more diverse community of researchers and citizens. Nevertheless, DeSci faces considerable obstacles. In addition to technological innovations, the acceptance and implementation of DeSci require, among other things, the establishment of legal clarity and, most importantly, institutional adjustments.
