Mempool

Benjamin Kraner and Claudio J. Tessone

Chapter 25 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 126-129 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A mempool, short for “memory pool”, is a critical component of blockchain systems that temporarily holds pending transactions before they are added to the blockchain. Transactions are validated and stored in the mempool, awaiting inclusion in a block. Mempools facilitate decentralised transaction propagation and allow block creators to prioritise transactions based on attached fees. They help transition transactions from an unordered state in the mempool to an ordered state in a block. Private mempools can also play a role in maximal extractable value (MEV), either protecting entities or benefiting nodes with private knowledge.
