Abstract: The Metaverse offers an expansive virtual environment powered by various technologies, including virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT). It has applications across multiple sectors, such as gaming, education, tourism, commerce, art, socialization, and business. This chapter provides an overview of the Metaverse's layers, highlights the key technologies essential for building these virtual spaces, and examines their functions. Recognizing the complexity of fully realizing the Metaverse and the current research gaps, the chapter also discusses challenges, potential research directions, and economic implications.
