Asset token

Henrik Axelsen

Chapter 3 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 15-21 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Asset tokenization converts the ownership or rights of an asset into a digital token on a blockchain, enabling easier trading, transparency, and fractional ownership. Asset tokens represent various assets, including real estate, commodities, and verified credentials like academic degrees or certifications. The tokenization process involves identifying and valuing the asset, ensuring legal compliance, and creating digital tokens via smart contracts. Verified credentials, tokenized on blockchain, provide secure and fraud-resistant identity verification, allowing individuals control over their personal data. Tokenization streamlines asset management and verification processes, but regulatory, security, and technological challenges still need to be addressed.
