Satoshi Nakamoto

Barry Varys

Chapter 40 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 198-204 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter focuses on Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin and author of the Bitcoin whitepaper. Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin in 2008 and used a unique combination of several existing technologies and cryptographic methods to develop the unique peer-to-peer system found in Bitcoin. Satoshi Nakamoto worked on Bitcoin from 2008 to 2011 before disappearing and leaving this creation to the world. The success of Bitcoin has created great interest in the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, but this remains a mystery. Potential identities behind Satoshi Nakamoto include Dorian Nakamoto, Hal Finney, Nick Szabo, and Craig Wright, among others.
