Seed phrase

Philipp Lang

Chapter 42 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 209-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A seed phrase is a list of words used to generate a secret key. Typically consisting of 12 or 24 words, it is also known as a mnemonic phrase that allows users to recover their wallets in case the secret key is lost. From the secret key generated by the seed, subsequent secret keys are derived, facilitating the use of new wallet addresses while maintaining security and offering recovery functionality. The term “seed phrase” was introduced to make key management in wallets more user-friendly by representing cryptographically secure random numbers as easily memorable word lists.
