Central bank digital currency

Nadia Pocher and Gilbert Fridgen

Chapter 8 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Cryptocurrencies, Blockchain and DLT, 2026, pp 39-45 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A central bank digital currency (CBDC) is a digital form of central bank money, available in retail and wholesale types, with potential for cross-border use. While a retail CBDC is a digital equivalent to physical cash, wholesale CBDCs cater to interbank transfers. Their stated drivers include financial stability, inclusion, and sovereignty. CBDCs require careful interdisciplinary design to balance security, privacy, usability, and regulatory compliance, through a complex technology stack that may or may not be blockchain-based. As central banks explore CBDCs, considerations include scalability, monetary policy, and global implications, but also prompt a broader debate on the future of money.
