Managing across cultures: sport leadership

Sam S. Chen, Grant Son and James J. Zhang

Chapter 11 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 153-168 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the reciprocal relationship between culture and leadership in sports. It begins by introducing various leadership styles and their treatment in sport management research, followed by a discussion of their interaction with two distinct levels of culture: national and organizational. Specifically, the illustrations focus on two areas: (a) how national culture influences leadership styles, drawing on insights from the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project, and (b) how leaders shape organizational culture based on the framework of culture creation and change. By reviewing relevant sport management literature, this chapter provides an overview of the intricate connections between culture and leadership in sports. The chapter concludes by identifying key areas for future research.
