Chapter 13 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 189-201 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter details the intricate relationship between sport and culture, focusing on homegrown sport events within the South African context. It explores the historical and socio-cultural dimensions of sport, illuminating how sport has served as a catalyst for cultural change in South Africa. A theoretical overview of the intersection between sport and culture is highlighted, showing how sport contributes to national identity, social cohesion, and the promotion of cultural diversity in a post-apartheid society. Case studies of local sport events, and more specifically, homegrown events as cultural signifiers in South Africa are showcased. These events have grown into cultural phenomena, attracting diverse participants and audiences. The role of homegrown events in promoting economic development and enhancing South Africa's global image as a premier sport tourism destination is further reflected. By combining conceptual and practical insights, this chapter offers a comprehensive understanding of how sport and culture are interwoven in South Africa, highlighting the role of local sport events as cultural signifiers.
