Chapter 14 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 202-214 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the intersection of sport, culture, and ethnicity, focusing on how sport organizational structures both reflect and reinforce sociocultural inequalities. Specifically, it investigates sport's perceived neutrality versus its exclusionary practices, the homogenizing effects of integrative policies, and the active resistance of ethnic minorities within these frameworks. The present chapter's rationale is rooted in the need to critically assess the limitations of current sport policies and the impact of hegemonic norms on minority participation. Ultimately, it highlights that the prevailing sport landscape reflects and reproduces existing inequalities despite an inclusivity discourse. Therefore, emphasis is needed on a transformative approach to the organization and policies of sport beyond superficial integration to genuinely embrace and celebrate cultural diversity.
