Geographies of sport culture research

Chapter 23 in Handbook on Sport and Culture, 2025, pp 344-362 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter employs a three-stage framework to analyze the geographies of sport culture studies with a particular focus on the discipline of sport management using a bibliographical method. A total of 1,109 empirical studies published by ten established sport management (SM) journals over a three-year period were included to address how various sport domains, specific sports, and continental contexts provided research settings for SM studies; how data gathered in these settings were interpreted through the authors’ cultural perspectives and methodological choices; and how SM knowledge was represented across the journals. The analysis revealed that research settings chosen to inform SM knowledge production were closely aligned with the popularity of sports and sport products in the real world, suggesting a likely alignment between SM theory and practice. Notwithstanding the considerable discrepancy in the extent of SM research between the global North and global South, studies situated within the Asian context have established a notable presence, frequently achieved through cross-continental collaborations.
