The current necessary focus on the living wage

Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead ()

Chapter 3 in The Fair Wage Solution, 2025, pp 111-159 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we focus on one of the Fair Wage dimensions, the living wage, which has become the centre of attention in recent years, not only among NGOs but also international organisations, national and international legislators, and, finally, investors. It is particularly interesting that companies have started to respond to this call to action with an increasing number of initiatives. We present here the different steps of a typical living wage ‘journey’ and present concrete examples of brands that have made a public commitment to pay a living wage. Finally, a case study presents how field work to calculate the living wage – or living income – for individual vanilla producers in Madagascar helped a brand, Company A, to stabilise the price of vanilla at a time when it was collapsing.
