Addressing root causes through the Fair Wage approach

Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead ()

Chapter 4 in The Fair Wage Solution, 2025, pp 160-192 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A growing number of companies are taking concrete action to ensure the payment of a living wage in their operations and possibly also suppliers, but it is also important to look at other areas in which reforms might be required in tandem with adjustments to the living wage. The empirical evidence presented in this chapter confirms that the positive effects of a living wage programme are definitely enhanced if it is accompanied by other reforms of wages and working conditions, underlining the business case behind ‘Fair Wages’. An overview of stakeholders confirms the need not to stop at the living wage, but to encompass many more issues. Finally, we present how the adoption of Fair Wage practices worldwide could help to achieve all the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
