Purchasing practices and business model
Daniel Vaughan-Whitehead ()
Chapter 5 in The Fair Wage Solution, 2025, pp 193-224 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Along brands’ current requirement of living wage and fair wage practices implemented along their global supply chains, it should be ensured that their business model is compatible with such progress. Evidence from surveys among suppliers and brands presented in this chapter identifies some weak and unbalanced purchasing practices – such as low prices, short lead times, inaccurate technical specifications, sudden changes in orders – that are found to have a direct downward effect on wages and working conditions among suppliers. Some possible guidelines for buyers to follow are proposed in this chapter to ensure a more balanced redistribution of responsibilities, innovation, and value-added among the different partners participating in the same global supply chains.
