Chapter 20 in Cases in Organization Development and Change, 2026, pp 193-204 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Major Focus of the Case: This case study examines the use of the SOAR framework within Antioch University's Enrollment Management (AUEM) team. SOAR, an appreciative inquiry-based approach to strategic thinking, planning, and leading, fosters positive, strengths-based conversations that unite teams around shared aspirations and measurable outcomes. Faced with geographic dispersion, time zone differences, and limited resources, the AUEM leadership adopted SOAR to create a collective vision and plan, encourage engagement, and align team efforts with the university's mission of social, economic, and environmental justice. Through a series of virtual workshops, the AUEM team collaborated to identify their strengths, explore opportunities, define aspirations, and outline results-oriented initiatives. This approach enhanced strategic alignment, strengthened relationships, and empowered the team to drive meaningful change. The SOAR process resulted in the successful creation of a three-year strategic plan and cultivated a culture of innovation, accountability, and empowerment within the division. The positive outcomes of this initiative demonstrate SOAR's potential as a flexible and generative tool for fostering organizational growth, engagement, and innovation across diverse sectors.
