Chapter 24 in Cases in Organization Development and Change, 2026, pp 237-241 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Major Focus of the Case: The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic left college and university leaders with difficult decisions. Many campuses closed down during the pandemic, and some had difficulties reopening. However, higher education had been experiencing financial woes for many years before the pandemic. With decreasing U.S. birth rates since the Millennial wave subsided, questions concerning the value of a college degree and rising tuition had already impacted college enrollments. There were frequent reports of colleges closing, often abruptly. In times of such increasing turbulence, organizations require strong leaders who recognize the importance of a healthy, unified workforce culture. This case focuses on how leaders can change cultures to build healthy organizations capable of weathering increasing storms on multiple fronts.
