Towards European economic sovereignty

.

Chapter 6 in Sovereign Europe, 2024, pp 104-116 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This last chapter summarizes the authors’ argument and concludes with an assessment of the meaning of a Europe that is “sovereign” both internally and externally, a dimension considered less important in the past. A more assertive global presence requires a stronger domestic economy. But to relaunch sustainable growth and gain a stronger role at global level, Europe needs more resources and instruments than it has today. The European system as now structured cannot work. In other words, what is needed is a thorough overhaul and renewal of European governance. This is the third great challenge facing Europe today, and it conditions the fulfillment of the other two. The chapter discusses configurations of the new European governance. The international political economy (IPE) approach will help in defining the ways in which this can happen. The authors claim that a greater differentiation of the path to European integration is an option that may prove to be an unavoidable first step, even more so in view of the enlargement of the EU.
