Chapter 15 in The Elgar Companion to Financial Economics, 2025, pp 276-291 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces the behavioural portfolio and the life cycle of savings and spending. It highlights the concept of the Behavioural Portfolio and draws a comparison between traditional and behavioural portfolio theory. In addition, the chapter delves into the psychological factors influencing investment decisions, shedding light on the distinctive features of the behavioural portfolio, as well as the challenges and critiques associated with it. Furthermore, the chapter explains the behavioural life cycle of savings and spending, again in contrast with the traditional theory, with a discussion of the behavioural factors that affect savings and spending decisions.
