Why DAOs choose Switzerland

Liburn Mehmetaj

Chapter 9 in Decentralized Autonomous Organizations in the Legal Landscape, 2025, pp 182-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The rise of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) is reshaping how organizations manage operations and finances. Switzerland, with its strong legal system, advanced technology environment, and supportive regulations, is becoming an attractive hub for DAOs. This chapter explores the reasons behind Switzerland's appeal, including its principles-based legal framework, regulatory clarity in financial market regulation established by FINMA, economic stability, and a vibrant startup ecosystem. Additionally, the country's tradition of direct democracy, political stability, and strong privacy culture align well with the decentralized ethos of DAOs. Despite the absence of specific DAO legislation, Switzerland offers a unique combination of regulatory flexibility and economic resilience, making it an ideal location for DAOs seeking a secure and innovative environment.
