Chapter 1 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 1-10 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this foregrounding chapter, the editors establish the need, purpose, and benefit of this groundbreaking Handbook, introducing paradigmatic perspectives of sport coaching research, methodological approaches used and why, theoretical frameworks and models that support or develop through research, and implications for sport coaching research and practice. The lead editor of each part provides a critical examination of how the chapters within the Handbook reflect the dominant disciplines that shape sport coaching research: psychology, pedagogy, and sociology, followed by a novel and forward-looking fourth part – the future of sport coaching research. While neatly organized by these four disciplines, the research, arguments, and subject matter traverse terrains and are often interconnected. As a result, the Handbook presents a deep understanding and analytic insight into salient topics in sport coaching.
