Sport coaching research using an andragogical perspective

Chapter 12 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 128-138 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
For over a decade, a pan-Canadian research team has pursued an understudied line of research to understand how to better coach adults in sport. In the beginning, there was no research to refute the assumption that coaches use the same approaches in coaching adults as they do with youth. Utilizing adult learning principles and modifying the popular adult education model ‘andragogy’, this team developed an evidence base related to the psychology of teaching and learning in adult sport with important implications for practice that traditional coach education programs have neglected. The creation of an intervention to support coaching Masters athletes using andragogical perspectives specific to sport participation has served to meet the motives, interests, and demands of the adult population engaged in leisure, recreational, and competitive sport. This chapter outlines the research approach in designing the intervention and explores the significance of the topic for academia and practice.
