Chapter 14 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 151-166 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter explores the inclusion of Indigenous pedagogies in sport coaching, emphasizing the importance of culturally responsive practices. It highlights the value of embedding Indigenous knowledge systems, such as Kaupapa Māori principles and cultural values, in creating respectful sporting cultures, enhancing learning outcomes, and empowering individuals and communities. The distinctiveness of Māori and Indigenous pedagogies, which prioritize spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being alongside physical performance are discussed in this chapter. In addition, the need for culturally responsive environments that reflect Indigenous values, fostering improved engagement and holistic development is considered. Through pragmatic examples from Aotearoa New Zealand sport, the ways in which Indigenous approaches, including storytelling, mentorship, and land-based learning, enrich mainstream coaching practices are illustrated. The authors advocate for the recognition and integration of Indigenous identities and knowledge systems to promote equity, reconciliation, and decolonization in sport. Ultimately, the chapter calls for embracing Indigenous pedagogies to benefit all participants and transform mainstream sport coaching practices.
