Chapter 15 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 167-177 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to make the case that sports coaching is, at its core, a socio-pedagogic endeavour. Through tracing a brief history of both sociological and pedagogical-oriented research, we claim that what remains missing is an appreciation of how a given educational theory plays out as situated coaching practice. In this respect, the learning-oriented actions employed by coaches have not been interrogated in terms of setting, while the social analysis has inadequately featured the intended pedagogy as part of the overall ‘doing’ or production of coaching. Drawing upon recent empirical research, the chapter calls for the adoption of a more comprehensive, in-situ lens; one that engages with the intentional pedagogical actions used by coaches in relation to the social forces to which they are inevitably subject.
