From then to now: a short history of sport coaching research

Wade Gilbert

Chapter 2 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 11-20 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to trace and describe the evolution of sport coaching research by highlighting influential periods, publications, and scholars that have shaped the journey. Three key periods are identified in the evolution of sport coaching research: The Spark – Learning from the Coach of the 20th Century (1970–1995); Coming Together – A Community Takes Shape (1996–2009); and Global Expansion – A Burgeoning Field (2010–present). These time periods are based on analysis of comprehensive reviews of coaching scholarship since 1970. The chapter concludes with a discussion on implications and directions for future research and practice.
