A nudge to sport coaching scholarship and the ‘researcher-developer’ or ‘developer-researcher’ role

Julian North

Chapter 21 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 246-261 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter is a nudge to, and proposal for, the applied disciplinary field of sport coaching research and is targeted at sport coaching researchers. Its main contribution is a tentative ‘psychology and sociology of us (as a community of sport coaching researchers)’ but with suggestions about how we might do things differently. Whilst there is a great deal to celebrate, as a community we underestimate and underuse what we have generated. I argue we should move away from some of the more seductive traditions of mainstream sport coaching scholarship, shaped in the main by parent disciplines and academic insecurities, towards an approach that is open and sensitive to policymakers and practitioners focusing on an insider, supportive, participatory, community building, increasingly political, approach, with greater attention to context, nuance, and language. I offer the latter as a more sustainable trajectory for the discipline in terms of values and resources.
