Chapter 23 in Handbook of Sport Coaching Research, 2026, pp 274-284 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Understanding digital technology and its contribution to coach learning and development is important for practitioners and sport pedagogues wanting to stay ahead of the coaching development curve. Continual advancements in communication and video recording tools, sport-specific training apps, and data analysis systems underline how coaches currently shape their athletes’ skills to attain performance success. Yet, how coaches can integrate these tools to support their own learning and development is much less understood. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the digital sports ecosystem, looking at some of the tools, technologies, and infrastructures influencing coach development. We then examine how coaches can use these digital tools and technologies to shape their own skills, attributes, and understanding of coaching practices. Finally, we briefly discuss the future of digital technology in coach learning and development, highlighting how advancements in AI are starting to build upon what constitutes modern-day coach development.
