Abstract:
Technological advancements have transformed sports, providing athletes and coaches with tools to enhance performance and well-being. Nonetheless, the influence of technology on the coach-athlete dyad is elusive and scientifically unexplored. Technology has facilitated improvements in the technical aspects of coaching such as training and performance analysis, and even positively contributed to the interpersonal aspects of coaching such as communication. However, technology could present challenges in the coaching relationship that coaches and athletes develop and nurture in the course of their partnership. In this chapter, it is argued that certain types of technology (such as video analysis, wearable sensors, and digital communication technology), or their implementation, can either weaken or strengthen the bonds that bind the coach and the athlete. Our discussion aims to illustrate that technology can be fundamental to the success and satisfaction of both the coach and the athlete when implemented carefully and purposefully.
