Chapter 4 in How to be a Successful Academic Researcher, 2024, pp 48-66 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides practical advice on getting funding to start a research career (the chrysalis stage) and then expanding your research trajectory through collaborating with other researchers (‘riding on coat tails’) and building your network of contacts. It explains different types of research funding that are available, multiple pathways to securing research funding, and gives tips on writing applications and proposals. Also, one of the most important ingredients for a successful research career today is introduced-engagement-with tips on how to engage externally with government departments and agencies, corporations, and non-government and non-profit organizations for mutual benefits. The ‘virtuous circle’ of engagement, research, and teaching is explained.
