Chapter 8 in How to be a Successful Academic Researcher, 2024, pp 191-193 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In many universities there is a divide, and sometimes a chasm, between researchers and teaching staff. Some researchers seek to avoid teaching to maximize their research career. However, this is not only inequitable for colleagues and students, but it results in lost opportunities to disseminate research findings to future academics and future leaders in industry and society, and it reduces an academic’s marketability as future jobs are likely to require teaching experience. We also learn through teaching. This chapter urges academic researchers to recognize the ‘virtuous circle’ of research, teaching, and engagement.
