Introduction to Austrian economics in management and entrepreneurship

Vishal K. Gupta and Per L. Bylund

Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Austrian Economics in Management and Entrepreneurship, 2025, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There is considerable scholarly agreement that Austrian economics is a leading approach to understanding entrepreneurial and managerial phenomena. Despite the widespread respectability Austrian scholars have gained over the past five decades among organizational scholars, a systematic exploration of Austrian contributions to management and entrepreneurship research has been missing. This introductory chapter provides a brief overview of the ten peer-reviewed chapters in this volume that deal with various ways in which Austrian ideas can advance academic inquiry in management and entrepreneurship. The chapter closes with a call for an exciting and provocative research agenda for future scholarship using Austrian insights to cast new light on questions of interest to management and entrepreneurship researchers.
