Abstract:
Abstract In this final chapter, we highlight some of our key learnings about meta-organizations as outlined in the chapters of this book and explore three interrelated questions that have received less attention yet are crucial for advancing our knowledge about meta-organizations: (1) Why do people create meta-organizations rather than other forms of inter-organizational cooperation? (2) How ambiguous can meta-organizations be? And what are the implications of ambiguity for their structure and their representation to others? (3) How are decisions made in meta-organizations? And what does it imply for the distribution of power and responsibility among members and meta-organizations? We end by summarizing arguments for the ways in which meta-organizations differ from other social forms, have unique consequences, and therefore deserve a special concept and theory.
