Crafting original and impactful research questions

Shaker A. Zahra

Chapter 12 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 226-247 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Research questions (RQs) shape the direction and impact of academic inquiry. This chapter focuses on ways to craft impactful RQs and highlights strategies to enhance their originality and relevance. It also explores the common pitfalls researchers encounter when formulating RQs and avoiding outdated and passé topics. By recognizing and avoiding common errors while employing strategic approaches to developing and selecting the RQs they study, entrepreneurial finance researchers can contribute meaningful insights to their field, advance academic discourse, and have professional and societal impact.
