Chapter 14 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 265-283 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Access to high-quality data is the cornerstone of empirical research in entrepreneurial finance, yet it remains a significant hurdle given that entrepreneurial firms are private, small, and young. This chapter serves as a critical resource for scholars by systematically mapping the fragmented landscape of available data. First, it offers a structured overview of essential data attributes and sources across four critical levels of analysis: (i) the entrepreneur or firm, (ii) the financiers, (iii) the organizations funding the financiers, and (iv) the regional or country context. Second, it outlines contemporary data collection strategies designed to overcome historical weaknesses in coverage and accuracy. By discussing tactics such as combining multiple data sources and leveraging proprietary information, this chapter equips scholars with the tools to enhance the methodological rigor and relevance of future entrepreneurial finance research.
