Banks

Marc Cowling, Huan Yang and Weixi Liu

Chapter 9 in Field Guide to Entrepreneurial Finance, 2026, pp 165-183 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Banks play a crucial role in mediating the flow of capital, acting as a payment system, and as a conduit for monetary policy. This chapter provides a one-stop overview of recent developments in the nature of banks in the context of their evolving role as providers of entrepreneurial finance with a focus on the following key themes: bank debt, credit rationing and SMEs; bank loan contracting; spatial inequality and distance. Exciting new avenues for research and how these can be framed within the context of theory are proposed, plus methodological issues outlined that may become apparent when researchers seek to explore these issues. In addition, suggestions are made about the kinds of data and datasets that may be useful to researchers interested in exploring new avenues of research into bank lending to SMEs and the potential for conducting new experiments.
