Do network and herd effects depend on previous work experience in the US? A propensity score analysis using Mexican migration data

André Rossi de Oliveira

Chapter 13 in Income Distribution, Economic Growth and Unemployment, 2025, pp 282-298 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter investigates network and herd effects on Mexican migration to the US, focusing on the influence of prior work experience. Using the EMIF Norte Border Survey, we compare location choices of migrants with and without prior US work experience, controlling for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. We find that migrants with previous US work experience favor states with a significantly higher share of the Mexican population than those without such experience, suggesting a stronger network effect. However, prior work experience does not appear to influence herd effects, the tendency to follow the decisions of previous migrants.
