Abstract:
Despite the rapid expansion of research on multi-sided digital platforms (MSDPs), our understanding of MSDP heterogeneity and its implications for platform strategy remains limited. Integrating contributions from the literature in strategy and organizations, this chapter describes the defining attributes of MSDPs and synthesizes insights from the fragmented literature on platform strategy. In so doing, the chapter identifies two sets of primary strategic choices underlying platform strategy: 1) choices associated with the governance of technology and boundary resources; and 2) scope choices addressing three areas: composition of actors and the platform's configuration or number of sides; orchestration resources and activities; and corporate boundaries. In combination, the overview yields an integrated definition of platform strategy as the mobilization of two or more sets of diverse autonomous actors, the orchestration of their interactions for value creation and the governing of the platform's scale and scope to advance ecosystem value and generativity.
