A data analytics approach for the selection of suppliers for achieving better sustainability of the manufacturing industries

Swarup Paul

Chapter 10 in Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and the Circular Economy, 2026, pp 136-151 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Achievement of sustainability is one of the goals for manufacturing industries today. The suppliers have key roles in achieving this sustainability. The role of the supplier starts from the raw material selection, transportation, processing, packaging, dispatching, and disposing. At every stage, the supplier should have adequate knowledge of sustainability. This is because, without the suppliers’ knowledge, it is difficult to proceed with sustainability achievement in the manufacturing industries. Manufacturing industries are required to be sustainable in order to ensure their own existence in future in a competitive, challenging situation; i.e., for the continued existence of workforce, product, process, and customer. Data analytics is a burning topic used in various fields of technology and management for its in-depth analytical capability. In the present work, the concept of data analytics has been incorporated into supply chain performance. The four components of analytics, diagnostics, deterministic, predictive and prescriptive, have been applied for a performance evaluation of the suppliers. Real-life data from manufacturing companies have been collected for the present study. The prescriptive analysis finally suggests regarding the selection priority of suppliers for the relevant industries.
