Agents-based model for MODFJSP with efficient energy consumption

Abstract: In the context of global manufacturing, production systems are often planned on multiple manufacturing sites at different locations to lower production costs and expand the business. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, such distributed manufacturing is gaining more interest from industries to fulfill demand across multiple manufacturing sites. The manufacturing sites commonly consist of multiple flexible machines that can operate all or partial operations to complete various jobs. This manufacturing system is considered a Distributed Flexible Job-shop (DFJ). The scheduling problem of DFJ is known as the Distributed Flexible Job-shop Scheduling Problem (DFJSP), which requires solving three sub-problems: factory allocation, job sequencing, and machine allocation. Research on DFJSP has been seen frequently in the literature in recent times. Energy efficiency in manufacturing is considered important to achieve sustainability in business and manufacturing industries. Thus, this chapter investigates the DFJSP with energy efficiency to minimize two objectives: makespan and total energy consumption. For the solution, DFJSP can be considered strongly NP-Hard, because adding the additional problem of factory allocation makes DFJSP more complex to solve than FJSP. To solve such a complex DFJSP, a decentralized decision-making based approach is proposed. The authors presented a novel decentralized approach based on a multi-agent system (MAS) with a hybrid Jaya algorithm. The approach has been demonstrated with an illustrative example. The future scopes are also discussed.
