Ethical logistics and green supply chain management

Chapter 13 in Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and the Circular Economy, 2026, pp 179-199 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the critical intersection of ethical logistics and Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM), proposing an integrated framework that addresses both social responsibility and environmental sustainability in logistics operations. While traditionally treated as distinct domains, ethical logistics and GSCM are increasingly interdependent, with shared goals of transparency, accountability, and resilience. Motivated by evolving policy demands (e.g. the EU Green Deal) and rising consumer expectations, the chapter explores how businesses can align ethical and green imperatives through technology adoption, including blockchain, AI, and IoT. It presents real-world case studies—such as Unilever, Patagonia, and Tesla—that demonstrate effective implementation of ethical and sustainable practices. Key barriers, including regulatory complexity, high costs, and cultural resistance, are critically analyzed, with strategic solutions offered across policy, practice, and technology. The chapter concludes by identifying future trends—circular economy, diversity and inclusion, and ESG reporting—as drivers of next-generation supply chains. By adopting an integrated approach, firms can enhance stakeholder trust, ensure compliance, and build competitive, future-ready logistics systems.
