AI and sustainable product design

Chapter 7 in Handbook on Artificial Intelligence and the Circular Economy, 2026, pp 92-106 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) enabled technologies are anticipated to offer long-term solutions to diverse product design problems by helping to boost product productivity and reduce wasteful energy use. In the present study, we aim to map existing literature on AI and sustainable product design by highlighting themes about multiple avenues for future research. While implementing the systematic literature review (SLR) technique, we attempt to first determine the different combinations of keywords, then retrieve data from Scopus and WoS databases, and then report the underlying theories and significant variables studied in the extant literature. The analysis aims to create models with certain mediating and moderating variables and to develop a deeper understanding of the theories used due to this research. In actuality, these theories, constructs, and variables will help industry practitioners successfully understand how sustainable product design is critical in the context of AI-enabled systems. It is then anticipated that the agenda we subsequently drafted will serve as a resource for scholarly academics and indicate fresh concepts for the next research projects. The findings will contribute to the implementation of sustainable product design in the context of AI.
