The analytical philosophy view of the concept of meaning
Alexander Styhre ()
Chapter 2 in A Pragmatist Theory of Economic Reason, 2025, pp 34-56 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The second chapter of the book outlines how a concept of meaning that could figure as a key component in a theory of rationality that is helpful when examining practical economic and business-related affairs of the kind that are examined in business schools would be premised on certain shared devices. A core proposition in the philosophy of language is that sapience, the higher-order capacity to cognitively apprehend and reflect on what is perceived in the world, being a specific human capacity, is dependent on the ability to understand and use a shared language. If such a language, which includes contentful concepts that can communicate what is perceived, what is thought, and so on can be mastered, humans can jointly generate meaning. Such meaning is in turn premised on the judgement made by interlocutors wherein claims made or beliefs expressed are assessed in terms of their reasonableness.
