Development and deliberation: social innovation in universities

Abstract: The interest in deliberation for problem-solving has increased over the last decades and has also begun to form part of contemporary debates on development. Deliberate practice can contribute to strengthening democratic processes and the institutions in which the scientific and technical knowledge dealing with controversial and complex issues will be enriched by considering this diversity of perspectives and the public exchange of arguments. As a democratizing theoretical and practical strategy, deliberation can greatly contribute to the conceptualization and practices of development, as well as the field of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary (ITD) studies. This represents a particularly interesting challenge for universities, related to the training of scientists and articulating their functions and social contributions. This chapter explores the contribution to development made by deliberation, as well as the ITD practices and formats that universities can develop, along with the challenges they face in doing so.
