On the concepts of development and its relations with innovation

Abstract: This chapter reiterates that debates about the role of innovation for development have a long history, which reveals convergences, but also significant differences. It reaffirms that the conceptualization of development shapes both the understanding of its relationships with innovation and of defining the type of innovation required to move forward. Hence, the importance of specifying the main convergences and divergences brought by different schools of thought to the understanding of these processes. Focusing on the need to think about future development, we privilege, among the available approaches, those that: do not ignore the important power issues involved; seek to capture in a systemic and contextualized way the set of countries, with their varying degrees of development; and make it possible to articulate and put into practice structural changes capable of facing the great challenges of their societies and guaranteeing the continuity of dignified and sustainable life on the planet.
