Abstract: This chapter reflects on the development challenges faced by Latin American countries to foster a renewed debate about the role of the productive structure within this process. Despite isolated successes, most countries in the region remain trapped in cycles of instability, low-value-added production, and deep social inequality. Past development strategies have become obsolete. Protectionist measures that once spurred productive development are ineffective in a globalized economy dominated by global value chains. Assembly strategies have also failed to generate sufficient employment and income. Considering emerging challenges such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and persistent inequality, the chapter highlights the need for integrated development strategies. By revisiting old debates on industrialization and emphasizing the centrality of structural transformation, this chapter outlines key elements for designing context-specific development strategies that foster inclusive and sustained growth in Latin America.
