Chapter 5 in Digital Human Finance, 2026, pp 76-90 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines digital financial inclusion (DFI) from the prism of social sustainability. The chapter starts by tracing the historical trajectory of financial inclusion, identifying the interaction between the digital turn and previous developmental initiatives. Unlike the earlier emphasis on credit and savings, today DFI covers a wider variety of financial services, ways of using them and providers. Consequently, DFI involves balancing between seemingly dichotomous outcomes and timescales. DFI is increasingly identified as an essential means to achieving sustainable development. The chapter analyses the opportunities and challenges to social sustainability in such initiatives. Adopting a contextual networked perspective can enhance sustainability within digital financial inclusion. The chapter proposes that DFI must weigh in on its holistic impact across scales (individuals, networks and communities).
