Effects of climate change on farmers’ adaptive investment in irrigation facilities: empirical evidence from national representative surveys in China

Abstract: This chapter examines farmers’ investment decisions in water supply and water-saving technologies in responding to climate change, using data from a nationally representative survey in China. In the short term, higher temperatures increase investments in water supply facilities, while precipitation shows a U-shaped effect: neither factor significantly affects water-saving technologies. In the long term, rising temperatures and decreasing precipitation drive investments in water supply and water-saving technologies. Extreme weather events, such as high temperatures and droughts, strongly influence investments in water supply but negatively affect water-saving technology investments. This chapter reveals how groundwater access aids adaptation, while water-scarce regions face greater challenges. Government subsidies are of limited effectiveness, and rice-growing regions are slow to adopt water-saving technologies, despite sensitivity to precipitation.
